Fingerprint Project

In LA, we are reading the Westing Game, and because of that, we are learning about diffrent mysteries, and in most mysteries the characters have to solve different crimes. We did a fingerprint activity where we rub our finger on led, and print it onto a piece of tape. We put the tape on a note card and labeled them.

Book Arts Project

In LA class, Peg Gignoux   -gignouxart.com-   came and help us make books for our “Perfect Planet” story.

We used leaves, and covered them in Akua Ink and put the print on a piece of  paper. We kept doing that, and soon we had a bunch of different prints. When we were finished printing, we used the leaves for plants, and cut the leaves for different items that describe our planet. I cut out the leaves to look like bows, clouds, the outline of Minnie Mouse’s face, letters, and more!

I loved this project! The part I loved the most was putting the pieces of paper where it will go, and putting the book together. I also really liked brainstorming ideas for what I was going to put on the book. This was a really fun project, and I loved seeing how my book turned out!

UNC Games

I already made a post about this game but I forgot to add something that was important to some fans:

In the bottom of the 7th inning, Gardner-Webb pitcher Grant Vera stepped up on the mound to try and protect Gardner-Webbs 4-7 lead. With two outs, UNC infielder, Jackson Van De Brake was up for bat. After a 1-2 count (1 ball, 2 strikes), Vera threw another strike, and celebrated too hard for Van De Brake. Vera stepped off the mound toward Van De Brake and flexed at him, Vera looked like he was yelling something to Van De Brake who tossed his bat and helmet on the the ground and started yelling back at Vera while storming up to him. Van De Brake was held back by the home plate umpire and assistant coach, Jason Howell, but players from both teams started coming out of both dugouts and onto the field. UNC head coach, Scott Forbes and Gardner-Webb head coach, Jim Chester started having a loud argument with umpires having to separate them.

After in the 8th inning, the Diamond Heels scored two runs and won the game.

About a month before that, UNC and Virginia Tech got in a fight about one of their players yelling something into the UNC dugout. The UNC catcher, Tomas Frick jumped up and told him to go and sit down, and that started some tension between the two teams. A day or two ago, Virginia Tech got into a fight with Clemson, and their head coach, John Szefc had to leave the game.

Last weekend, (May 11-13) UNC swept their last home game against NC State with a game winning run by Mac Horvath. The other two games were won by UNC with a score of 9-3 and 12-2.

Stock Market Game

In LA we are doing a stock market game where we invest in companies. We are doing it because we are reading The Westing Game, and in it stocks are pretty important. There is a bunch to do with stocks in The Westing Game. We got to choose partners. I am partners with Kendall: https://29kendallw.edublogs.org/  We are not doing very well. We invested in Starbucks, Nike, Disney World, AT&T, and Amazon. Starbucks and Amazon.

Our group name is L&K Stocks. L&K is short for Lena and Kendall. Here is a picture of our logo:

We have lost -185.27 dollars. Our total price is 19799.06 dollars. Our total dollars spent is 19984.33.

Colonel Virts Visit

Colonel Virts visited DA to talk about his life as a retired astronaut, and a book he wrote called “The Astronaut’s Guide to Leaving the Planet”.

Photo by my advisor Mrs. Williams

He is a retired NASA astronaut for the International Space Station Commander and colonel in the United States Air Force. His space missions are Expedition 42 and 43, Soyuz TMA-15M, and STS-130.

I enjoyed listening to him speak about his time in outer space. It was really cool to see all the pictures of space that he took!

University of North Carolina vs Gardner-Webb

The Diamond Heels hosted Gardner-Webb at the Bosh last night at 6:00 p.m. We started off in the first inning with no runs. The first inning led to the second, still 0 all. Tar Heels hit the first run in the bottom of the third inning. The Junior Infielder, Mac Horvath hit a two-run home run out over to left field. 2-0 Tar Heels. Casey Cook, number 35 and Vance Honeycutt, number 31 have both reached base in more than 30 games, and Mac Horvath owns the Tar Heels’ longest hitting streak at six games! In the top of the fourth inning, Gardner-Webb hit 3 runs, putting the score 2-3, Gardner-Webb. In the 5th inning, the score is left at 2-3 Gardner-Webb. In the bottom of the sixth, Mac Horvath hit a leadoff single to left field, followed by junior first baseman Hunter Stokely singling up the middle, advancing Horvath to third. UNC tied the game as sophomore outfielder Reece Holbrook bunted, driving in Mac Horvath. In the 7th, Gardner-Webb hit another run, making the score 2-4. UNC tied the game after an error brought in Honeycutt then, Gardner-Webb’s pitcher, Phil Fox made an illegal move on the mound that the umpire deemed to be deceitful to Mac Horvath, giving the Heels 3 more runs, a 5-4 lead in the 8th. In the ninth, the Diamond Heels were able to prevent any damage from Gardner-Webb, winning the game 5-4! The Tar Heels open their last home series of the regular season on Thursday against NC State. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.

Chamber Theatre Production

At our school, we watched a Chamber Theatre Production. The 7th and 8th grade watched the first two, and we got to come in during C period to watch the other two. The two that we watched was “The Monkeys Paw,” which was about this monkeys paw that you could wish on. Some one gave to this couple who had a son, and the couple wished for a ton of money. They got the money, but they lost their son, so they decided to wish for their son to come back. Their son came out of his grave as a skeleton. The other one was “The Necklace” which was about this poor couple, and they got invited to a ball. She had no fancy dresses, so her husband spent almost all their money for a dress. She had her dress, but something was missing. She needed the most beautiful necklace to go with it. She had a friend who had lots of jewelry, so she went to her. Her friend gave her a necklace, so the coupe went to the ball and had a wonderful time. When they got home, she noticed the necklace was gone. She told her friend it got dirty, so she had to wash it. So she went off and spent all the rest of their money on a diamond necklace that looked exactly like it to replace it. She gave it to her friend, but her friend said “The necklace I gave you, is different, the one that I gave you is useless, this one is diamond!”

The performers were awesome! They were very entertaining, and kept the story going. I liked it! It was very fun to watch!

French Presentation

In French we did a presentation about someone. I did my presentation about my dog, Boone. I said how old he is (2), I said what his favorite things are to do (Play, eat, and travel), I said his birthday (September 22), and I said where he was born (South Carolina). It was really fun to do. I had to memorize what to say because we were only allowed to put ten words on the presentation. We had to use the vocabulary that we know. It was fun, and I learned a bit about Boone, like his exact birthday. It was awesome!

Here is a picture of one of the slides in my presentation:
